Farmer rowing boat in Mithila wetland collecting foxnut seeds

The Ancient Wetland Ponds of Mithila

Over 85% of the world’s makhana originates in the floodplains of North Bihar. In Mithila, local farming and fishing communities wade through still, natural wetlands to harvest prickly water lily seeds from the pond beds. The seeds are sun-dried, fire-roasted in clay pots, and popped by hand into crunchy jumbo makhana.

  • ✓ GI Registry Certified origin
  • ✓ Sun-dried & traditionally popped
  • ✓ Directly supporting Mithila wetland harvesters
Ancient Himalayan Terai landscape and black grains of Kala Namak rice

The Himalayan Terai of Kapilvastu

Siddharthnagar in eastern Uttar Pradesh lies in the Terai belt right beneath the Himalayas. Fed by mineral-heavy meltwater, this unique soil imparts Kala Namak rice its famous aroma and distinct black husk. Legend recounts that Lord Buddha gifted these very scented grains to the disciples of Kapilvastu.

  • ✓ GI Tagged to 11 specific districts of UP
  • ✓ Unpolished grain retaining bran nutrients
  • ✓ Sourced from farming families in Siddharthnagar

Clear Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our sourcing, quality, and shipping.

Where is your Makhana sourced from?
Our Makhana is sourced strictly from the GI-tagged Mithila region of Bihar. This floodplain wetland ecosystem has cultivated foxnuts for over a thousand years. Traditional communities harvest the seeds from natural wetlands and hand-pop them under intense woodfire heat.
What makes Farm & Me Makhana different from regular supermarket makhana?
Most commercial brands pack smaller-grade, broken makhana that tends to be chewy, hollow, or contains bitter hard shells. At Farm & Me, we curate large-sized A1 grade makhana that yields a dense, satisfying crunch, clean white texture, and 11g of natural protein per 100g.
Where does Kala Namak Rice come from and what is its history?
Kala Namak Rice is sourced directly from farming communities in Siddharthnagar in the Terai region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Scented by Himalayan meltwater and cultivated since 600 BC, it is celebrated as Lord Buddha's gift to the kingdom of Kapilvastu. Its husk is pitch black, earning it the moniker "The Scented Black Pearl of India."
Is Kala Namak Rice suitable for people monitoring blood sugar?
Yes. Unlike polished white rice which has a high Glycemic Index of 65–75 and causes quick insulin spikes, Kala Namak Rice is unpolished with a certified Glycemic Index < 55 (Low GI). It digests smoothly, releases glucose steadily, and provides 10.6g of plant protein.
How do I cook Kala Namak Rice for the best texture and aroma?
Rinse the grains gently 2–3 times and soak for 15–20 minutes. For fluffy biryani-style grains, cook in a pressure cooker using 2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice. For a softer comfort texture, cook in an open pot with 2.5 cups of water. Pro-tip: Adding 1 teaspoon of pure desi cow ghee while boiling releases an intoxicating aroma throughout the house!
Why might the rice packaging look slightly different in some shipments?
Depending on small-batch bottling cycles, you may receive either our white & pink illustrated pouch or our eco-friendly kraft paper zip pouch. Rest assured, the GI-certified harvest inside is identical and meets our exact quality standards.
Do you deliver across India and how long does shipping take?
Yes, we ship pan-India across 20,000+ pin codes. Orders are processed in 2–5 days (as products are packed in fresh small batches). Transit across India takes 3–7 business days, resulting in a total estimated doorstep delivery of 5–10 days. Orders above ₹499 enjoy 100% Free Shipping.
